Unleashed Champagne Reception Contest Update: Winners

Firstly, I want to thank everyone for taking part in our fundraiser. It isn’t over yet. We still have a month and a half to go. October 31st is your absolute deadline to donate. We have reached $32,000 (our goal was $30,000). We have a few more tricks up our sleeve so keep your eyes open for those on Twitter (@xPaws4aCausex and also here on the site.

I have 3 eBay Auctions coming up and will run them in late September and early October. They are pretty nifty items that I’m sure some of you will treasure for a long time!

Now on to the winners. I have yet to draw the random donators however the top two winners for the contest are:

1) Teela Bryant, who donated a whooping $4,525 to Paws 4 a Cause. Some of the donations went towards the new A/C unit for St Tammany Humane Society as well as their Garden of Ian and Medical Supplies for the animals.

2) Courtney DeCosta also donated the 2nd highest amount and her donations went towards the Garden of Ian, Medical Supplies, and A/C Unit.

Teela will be my guest at the Champagne Reception for the Unleashed Bash at the Bayou event. Courtney will be my guest at our main table, which has preferred seating close to the front of the stage.

Congratulations ladies and thank you for your ongoing support of our project!

I will announce our random winners within the next few days!

Winners are being contacted so I can mail them their tickets!

Don’t forget to donate or visit our Cafe Press store. All donations matter and make a difference! Whether it be $1, $10, $100 or more.

Thank you everyone!!!

Paws 4 a Cause: Thank You LJ Smith Book

As many of you know, The Vampire Diaries author LJ Smith has been very generous with our cause. She donated directly to the St Tammany Humane Society and she has also been sending us items that we could put in our gift baskets and run ebay auctions with.

While I thank her often, I feel that it isn’t enough and wanted to do something very special for her. This is why I’m putting together a Thank You book together for her.

Campaign Efforts: Free Tony the Tiger

Tony the Tiger? No, we’re not talking about Frosted Flakes cereal. We’re talking about an actual tiger who happens to be called “Tony”. Tony is a 10 year old beautiful Siberian/Bengal Tiger who is privately owned by a man named Michael Sandlin. Tony lives at a Truck Stop located in Grosse Tete, Louisiana.

I bet you had to take a double-take, didn’t you? Yes, Tony lives at a Truck Stop. Mr Sandlin is using Tony as a tourist attraction at his truck stop. This means that Tony lives in a cage, sleeps on a concrete floor, breathes in toxic fumes and also eats a poor diet because Mr Sandlin thinks it’s ok to use Tony in such a manner.

There are animal activist groups out there who have been trying to get the attention of the Louisiana State Government and letting them know it is NOT ok to treat Tony like this. There are other ways to keep tigers in captivity and none of them should include a Truck Stop cage.

This is why we, Paws 4 a Cause, are now taking a stand. We will NOT tolerate this kind of animal abuse. We will NOT allow this to continue. We WILL FIGHT to FREE TONY.

Here is some information that you can use to contact the “powers that be”, aka as Governor Bobby Jindal.

  • 1. Call the Governor’s office: 1-225-342-7015 or 1-225-342-0991
  • 2. Postal letters can be sent to:
    Governor Bobby Jindal
    Office of The Governor
    P. O. Box 94004
    Baton Rouge, LA 70804-9004
    UNITED STATES
  • 3. Online e-mail contact form: http://www.gov.la.gov/index.cfm?md=form&tmp=email_governor
  • 4. Follow Tony on Twitter: http://twitter.com/FreeTonyTiger and tweet this petition at Bobby Jindal:

    RT @freetonytiger: Plz RT 2 Sign: Petition @BobbyJindal To Help Tony #Tiger @ #Louisiana #Truck Stop http://act.ly/36o #FreeTonyTiger

  • 5. Once you have spread the word on Twitter or Facebook, don’t just leave it. Write a letter to Governor Jindal. I have a sample letter below that you can use (Thanks to @Katrinka1066)
  • The most important thing to remember, when running campaigns like this one, spreading the word is NOT ENOUGH. Spread the word, yes. But after you have said your piece about the situation take the next step. Write those letters or make those phone calls. Only then can we say that Tony will be closer to Freedom.

Here is a sample letter you can use to send Bobby Jindal. You are free to write your own, and if you want to share it with us so we have more examples to use, please use our contact button above to send it.

    Dear Governor Bobby Jindal,

It has come to my understanding that there is a tiger being kept in a cage at Tiger Truck Stop in Grosse Tete Louisiana. Although it is technically legal to maintain a wild animal in captivity at a private business of this nature in Louisiana (a permit was renewed), it is not moral, nor is it wise. Just a few years ago, a wild tiger that was considered “tame” attacked Roy of the stage show, Siegfried and Roy, in Los Vegas. And recently, a tiger that had been taunted at a California zoo jumped out of a cage built by professionals, and killed a visitor on Christmas day in 2007. We were all terrified when these incidents happen, yet we seem to conveniently forget that these are wild animals when we want to use them as living advertisements. They have not been domesticated.

Although these animals are kept in zoos, it does not mean that should be kept in backyards, or in front of truck stops. Research has shown these animals to be sensitive, unpredictable, and, in many ways, fragile. I implore you to take action and remove this animal from a miserable life as a truck stop side show and place it in an environment, that although is not a wild habitat, would be far kinder than a roadside cage. This would not only be kinder for the animal, but would foster good will with many people, and, in addition, would remove the chances of something dire occurring with this large, wild and highly unpredictable animal. Many states have shown compassion and intelligence and have outlawed the keeping of wild animals in circumstances such as this, please show that Louisiana will champion the welfare of the animal and not the greed of people who keep these animals in unsuitable captivity.

    Thank you,

Make sure you do this in professional format and also sign your full name and include your mailing address. DO NOT get aggressive and do not use profanity or anything of the like. Those kind of letters will get thrown in the garbage. Keep your purpose clear and concise and always remain professional. Remember that in writing to the Governor, you represent every single living person who wants to see Tony freed.

When you have sent your letter (either via regular post or via email), please leave a comment on this post to let us know you have done so. This way we can keep track of how many are supporting this campaign.

Thank you for reading! Now get to work!

Special Announcement: L.J. Smith Supports Paws 4 a Cause

I am beyond pleased and excited about this special announcment. I have recently been in touch with L.J. Smith, the creator of The Vampire Diaries series and she is more than willing to help us with our cause.

As it turns out, Lisa has a soft spot for our furry friends. She told me about her dream home and her plans to adopt as many animals as she can so that they don’t have to live in an animal shelter or be put at risk to be euthanised.

This lady has a HUGE heart and I’m so thrilled to have her as a supporter. She has agreed to do a post on her site about our cause (which is done, you can view it here) as well as send to me some autographed and rare items for us to auction on ebay.

Here is an excerpt from her blog post:

I came across a wonderful new project last week. Anybody who knows me knows my love for animals, and I got an email from Natalie Gould, who runs a fansite for the Vampire Diaries TV series (http://the-vampirediaries.com). To quote her, “Back in September 2010, I began a birthday project for Ian Somerhalder (Damon Salvatore on the show), to raise funds for a no-kill animal shelter located in Ian’s hometown of Covington, Louisiana.”

Well, how could I resist? I love animals, and I love Damon, and I love Ian Somerhalder’s performance of Damon (yes, even before I read an article and heard of another in which he said that he and Paul Wesley had read some of The Vampire Diaries books to get in character).

As soon as I get the first delivery of items from her, I will begin our new set of ebay auctions. Don’t forget, we currently have a special autographed photo featuring The Vampire Diaries trio (Paul, Nina & Ian) up on ebay. Make sure you place your bid.

Special thank you to Lisa for being so kind, generous and willing to help us.

And to the rest of you, please stand by for further announcements in regards to the ebay auctions!

Special Video Feature: Through The Eyes of a Child

Over the weekend, Shannon Plaisance (P4aC’s New Orleans Team Leader), ended up coming across a beautiful stray Pit Bull. She did contact St Tammany Humane Society to bring her in, but unfortunately they are full at the moment. Shannon has taken it upon herself to take care of “Pit” until space can be cleared up.

Shannon’s daughter took a liking to the dog and spent some time with her. Shannon managed to catch it on film and has shared this beautiful video of her daughter interacting with “Pit”.

This is a prime example of how important a role St Tammany Humane Society plays in their community. Without this no-kill animal shelter, “Pit” wouldn’t stand a chance. But before “Pit” can be brought to STHS, space needs to be cleared up at the shelter. If Shannon were to take “Pit” to any other shelter, she would likely be euthanised.

We don’t want this to happen. We want “Pit” to find a forever home. How can YOU make that happen? Consider adopting a pet currently staying at St Tammany Humane Society. Consider donating to the shelter (we’ve got lots of ways to do that, check our left sidebar). Contact your local area no-kill animal shelter to see if they have space. Maybe they can take some of St Tammany Humane Society’s pets so we can open up space. So many possibilities. Only you can help them become reality. Remember, STHS can make arrangements to send a pet anywhere in the world. They’ve done it before and are more than willing to do it again. Visit their site St Tammany Humane Society to find out how.

Take a look at the video (feel free to share, it’s on youtube), and then choose one of our fundraising projects to send along your contribution to make a difference for animals like “Pit”.

Fundraising Efforts: “Snail Mail” Donations

It is with much excitement and enthusiasm that I announce Paws 4 a Cause can now accept regular mail-in donations. Special thank you to St Tammany Humane Society for working with us on this special fundraising project.

My team and I have always felt that we were missing out on potential donations because we were unable to accept checks or money orders. This is no longer the case. You can now mail a check or money order from any country in the world to the St Tammany Humane Society and it will be included in our Birthday Project’s total.

Please click here to continue on to the instructions page.
